Scuba

In December we went scuba diving off Shelley Beach.  Shelley is a beach within walking distance of our home and is the only North-facing beach on the northern peninsula.  That means the waves are quite small and so Shelley is generally visited by people with small children.

The water is quite cold, people dive in 5- or 6-mil wetsuits, and some people even use dry suits which are what people use when diving in ice!  The water isn’t that cold, there is never ice in the water in Sydney.  The largest animal we saw underwater was a 6-foot dead shark.  Most of the fish were 12 inches or smaller and were in a subdued color palette of browns and blues.

It was good to be diving again in spite of the subdued scenery.  There were some adjustments to be made as the air tank pressure is measured in BAR and not PSI and depths are measured in meters and not feet, but with a maximum water depth of 11 meters, we didn’t have to watch our depth at all and our dive master said we would dive until we had a specific BAR left in our tanks.

When we left New York the black belts of the Taekwon-Do school gave us money to go diving and we will certainly go again but I think we will be traveling out of town for further diving.
